Father of the Fatherless

Father of the Fatherless

A study by Elder Jim Piekunka

Luke 8:40    And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.  KJV

Ps 68:4-6    God is a Father to the Fatherless.

4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds — his name is the LORD — and rejoice before him.  5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.  6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

Rom 8:15-17    15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.  And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”   16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.  17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.   NIV

Ps 68:5-6  God sets the fatherless in a new family.

5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.   6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

James 1:26-27  God’s true religion is to help widows and orphans.

27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.   NIV

Ps 10:14  God is the helper of the fatherless if they commit to Him.

14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand.  The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.   NIV

Prov 23:10-11  Don’t cheat the fatherless or find yourself fighting with God.

10 Do not remove the ancient landmark, Nor enter the fields of the fatherless;  11 For their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you.   NKJV

Ex 22:22-24  Widows and orphans should cry to God when they need His help.  He will hear!

22 “You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child. 23 If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry; 24 and My wrath will become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.   NKJV

Prov 15:25  God watches over the widow’s borders, which include her children & her home.

25 The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.  KJV

Mal 3:5-7  God will fight against those that oppress the widows and the fatherless.

5 “So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me,” says the LORD Almighty.

6 “I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. 7 Ever since the time of your forefathers you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD Almighty.   NIV

Ps 146:9  God relieves the fatherless and the widows.

9 The LORD watches over the strangers; He relieves the fatherless and widow; But the way of the wicked He turns upside down.   NKJV

Deut 24:17-22  God will always be a provider for the widow and orphan.  He doesn’t change.

17 “You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge. 18 But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing.

19 “When you reap your harvest in your field, and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. 21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it afterward; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. 22 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this thing.   NKJV

Jer 49:11  God wants your trust & has made provision for you!  God’s heart does not change.

11 Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; And let your widows trust in Me.” NKJV

Ps 9:9-10    Fathers are protectors of their family

9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.  10 Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.    NIV

  • Matt 2:13-15   13 When they (The wise men) had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”  14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”    NIV

Ps 28:6-7  God and fathers have a heart to help others.  They are not selfish.

6 Praise be to the LORD, for he has heard my cry for mercy.   7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.  My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.       NIV

Isa 63:16    God’s faithful remnant always acknowledges God as their Father.

16 But you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us or Israel acknowledge us; you, O LORD, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.      NIV

Isa 9:6    The Messiah Jesus Christ will have the heart of the Father.

6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.     NKJV

John 14:9  When you see Jesus, you should see Father God

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.  How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?   NIV

Acts 2:41  Receiving the Word gladly will motivate you to action.

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.  KJV

Holy Spirit at Work in Our Lives

Elder Sylvia June 7, 2020

How the Holy Spirit works in our lives and healing

In contrast to the baptism with the Holy Spirit which is the one-time Act by which God places believers into his body- The filling is a repeated reality of Spirit controlled behavior that commands believers to maintain.

Peter in many others in Acts 2 were filled with the Spirit again – And so spoke boldly the word of God.

The fullness of the Spirit affects all areas of life not just speaking boldly.

Eph. 5:19,33

The Holy Spirit –

Isa. 48:16        He Creates and gives Life

Acts 8:29         He directs

1Cor. 2:13       He instructs

John 16:8        He Reproves

Acts 9:31         He Comforts

Rom. 8:26       He helps our weakness

John 14:26      He Teaches

John 16:13      He Guides

Rom.11:33      He searches all thing

John 14:17      He dwells with the believers

Isa. 11:2           He is the Holy Spirit of Counsel

Matt. 10:20     He is our Father

Isa. Isa. 11:2- Eph. 1:17    He is the Holy Spirit of Wisdom

John 14: 17                     He is the Holy Spirit of Truth

Isa. 58:8 –    Then your light shall break forth Like the morning – Your healing shall spring forth speedily – And your Righteousness shall go before you – The Glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard

Mal.4            But to you who fear the My Name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise – With healing in his Wings and you shall go out – and grow fat like stall fed calves

Psalm 103:3   Who forgives all your iniquities – Who heals all your diseases

Acts 9:34         And Peter said, to him, Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you, arise make your bed – Then he arose immediately

Holy Spirit and Fire

Luke 3:16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming; whose sandal strap I am not worthy to lose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  • Baptize means to immerse, submerge G907 bap-tid’-zo
  • Comes from the root word G911 bap-to “cover wholly with a fluid”

Promise of the Holy Spirit

Acts 1:4-5  And being assembled together with them, He [Jesus] commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Power to be Witnesses

Acts 1:6-8 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

  • We need the power of God to fulfill the purpose of God
  • There is no substitute for the power of the Holy Spirit upon a church
  • Power – G1411 force, miraculous power, ability, abundance, strength, mighty, (wonderful) work.
  • This power is the worker of miracles

Day of Pentecost

Acts 2:1-4 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  • Wind and Fire and speaking with other tongues – I involved using their voices. We release God’s voice into the world. We cannot be silent.
  • This was the birthing of the Church – the Ecclesia

The Greek word used for “Church” in the book of Acts is “Ekklesia” which means “called out ones.”

Encyclopedia Britannica: The term “ecclesia” was the name given to the governmental assembly of the city of Athens in which officers were granted political power and juridical functions.

We have been called into the Kingdom “for such a time as this.” (Es 4:14).

Demonstration of the Spirit and of Power

I Corinthians 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

  • Demonstration G585 – manifestation; from the root 584 “To show off”

Peace Be With YOU!

John 20:19-20 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

  • “Peace be with you.”

John 20:21-22 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

  • Peace to you!

Strong’s G1515 – Peace, quietness, rest, set at one again.

  • He breathed on them, “Receive the Holy Spirit”

The Holy Spirit and Fire May 24 Sermon Outline

Holy Spirit and Fire

Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The Spirit of God Came Upon Them

Act 2:1-4 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

  • The Spirit was given on the same day the Law was given in the Old Testament

Acts 2:41-44 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

Miracle of the Lame Man – in Acts 3

Acts 3:6-10 Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.  So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God. Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

With All Boldness Speak The Word

Acts 4:29-30 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”

Acts 4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. NIV

  • Greek Word 3954 – Boldly.παρρησίας (parrēsias)
all out-spokenness, i.e. Frankness, bluntness, publicity; by implication, assurance.
  • Boldness is a divine enablement that comes to ordinary and unprofessional people.
  • Boldness is the Holy Spirit moving through someone with a divine surge of power and ability.
  • Boldness is the result of being filled with the Holy Spirit.
